미국의 표어는 여전히 “In God We Trust”이다.

Christian Influence on U.S. Politics

Donald Kirk

The influence of religion over American politics is pervasive. With the notable exception of John F. Kennedy, America's only Catholic president, all American presidents have been Protestants.

The first president, George Washington, was Episcopalian, raised as an Anglican before the American revolution when the church, like the American colonies, broke away from England and changed its name. the Episcopalian church remains part of the Anglican communion, and the National Cathedral in Washington, the center of the Episcopal Church, is where funerals are often held for former presidents.

Over the past two centuries, however, other religions have gained in numbers as the United States expanded westward and immigrants poured in from Europe.

Baptists, divided and often in disagreement with one another, appeal to deeply held beliefs, sometimes quite fundamentalist, in some sense a response to the elitism of other religions, notably the Episcopalians.  That's no guarantee, however, of political conservatism.  Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, Democrats with liberal views, were Baptists.

The fundamentalism that dominates millions of Baptists extends to evangelism, as seen in the rise of evangelical congregation and faiths throughout North America. At the heart of the evangelical movement is the need to be "born again" as a Christian. Evangelical Christians take the scriptures literally and dispute the views of other Christians that the story of the virgin birth and resurrection of Christ may be symbolic or apocryphal.

Evangelical preachers pack churches with long sermons. From this appeal has arisen the concept of "charismatic" teachings led by compelling figures with spell-binding powers over  their flock. Their Sunday services, as well as those of other religious leaders, are often televised.

These devout Christians exercise strong influence over "middle-America" in terms of both geography and outlook. It's no coincidence that candidates for the Republican nomination for president tend to come from the Bible Belt, the "heartland" the center of the country.

They share the values of fundamentalism and creationism as opposed to "evolution of the species" and oppose abortion and "gay" marriages while going back to "core" values shared by millions suspicious of well-to-do intellectuals accused of subverting American life. They offer a dynamic faith against the waning beliefs of old-line Christians, many of whom by now go to church rarely if at all.

Yet the American Protestant tradition comes in many forms. Historically, American missionaries have spread education along with religion worldwide.

No country owes more to their influence than Korea, where missionaries, after encountering violent resistance, not only spread religions but also founded universities. Yonsei had its origins in the late 19th century and emerged as a full-fledged university under Horace Underwood in the Japanese era. Sogang was founded by Jesuits well after the Korean War.

Although Protestants would appear to dominate American political life, Catholic and Jews arriving in the 19th century have had a profound impact. Until Kennedy's election in 1960, it was widely believed a Catholic could never become president. Vice President Joseph Biden is a Catholic, and Catholics hold thousands of seats from local governments to the Congress.

Ireland and Italy, both Catholic countries, spawned millions of immigrants.  They tended to vote Democratic against entrenched, wealthy Republicans, but their descendants also are deeply conservative on such issues as illegal immigration and crime.

The tidal wave of European immigration also carried millions of Jews from Russia, Germany and eastern Europe. They too tended to be liberal in response to "anti-Semitic" discrimination by an old-line Christian establishment, but the Jewish outlook is tempered by the need for the U.S. to remain firm in its commitment to aid the Jewish state of Israel against Muslims nation and terrorists.

The "neo-cons" of Washington are largely Jewish, and Jewish organizations court the favor of Baptists and evangelicals concerned about "the holy land" much of it in Israel. Most of America's six million Jews live in urban areas far from the Bible Belt but no American politician dares incur the wrath of Jewish voters,  wealthier and better educated than any other grouping.

Despite the influence of religion on American politics, the system remains firm in the concept of "separation of church and state." In keeping with that dictum, public schools  no longer have students saying the Lord's prayer. Still, the motto of the U.S. remains, "In God We Trust"  a reflection of the power of religion over American society regardless of religious affiliation or faith.
