WASHINGTON = Russia's major global propaganda organ has suffered a black eye here in the midst of the headline-grabbing investigation into secret contacts between President Donald Trump and his former national security adviser, the retired lieutenant general Michael Flynn, with Russians.  Adding more adverse fuel to the fire, RT, aka Russia Today, the global television and radio arm of the Kremlin, was expelled from coverage of the U.S Congress for putting out "fake news" and other offenses that deepened suspicions of Russian involvement in American politics.
Kenneth Rapoza, writing for forbes.com, said the organization responsible for opening the doors to coverage of congress, Congressional Radio and Television Correspondents' Galleries, had by unanimous vote decreed that RT journalists would no longer have media badges or access to congressional gatherings. RT was accused of dishonest reporting about Hillary Clinton in an obvious attempt at drumming up opposition to her presidential campaign last year. Craig Caplan, chairman of the Congress Radio and TV Correspondents, reportedly notified RT of the decision. "The ruling is effective immediately" said the forbes.com report. "RT is no longer attending congress's press briefings as of Thursday."
The extraordinary action against RT, described as "Russia's biggest media company" came as President Trump fought off the fallout from Flynn's decision to plead guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with the Russian ambassador, Sergey Kislyak, during the transition from the presidency of Barack Obama to that of Trump. Although Flynn appeared only to have talked about sanctions, the case has exploded into a scandal that threatens Trump's presidency. Trump fired the FBI director James Comey last May after asking him to go easy in his investigation of Flynn, whom Trump had to dismiss for lying after he'd been on the job as national security adviser for only 24 days since Trump's inauguration in January.
With Flynn's guilty plea, the scandal again has consumed Trump's attention. The prospect of Flynn going on trial was far bigger news here than U.S.-South Korean exercises involving hundreds of warplanes and naval vessels. The U.S. media barely reported on the war games or North Korea's denunciation of Trump as "insane" for having pushed "the already acute situation on the Korean peninsula to the brink of nuclear war."
Flynn in his conversation with the Russian ambassador broached the possibility that Trump might be interested in softening sanctions imposed on Russia by Obama in exchange for Russia's opposing an anti-Israel resolution in the United Nations. In a tweet, Trump declared, "I never asked Comey to stop investigating Flynn." He accused the media of disseminating "more fake news covering another Comey lie."
Flynn, in order to escape a jail sentence, has to cooperate to the hilt in the investigation by a special counsel, Robert Mueller, into the whole issue of Russia's attempting to influence the outcome of the presidential election last year in favor of Trump. Flynn, whose attorneys ceased cooperating with White House attorneys several weeks ago, might well bear witness to efforts by Trump himself to deal with the Russians,
RT, that is Russia Today, has become a powerful voice for Russian policy, carrying reports denouncing U.S. policy, quoting senior Russian officials along with "experts" all critical of the U.S., particularly on North Korea. Russia Today's top editor, Margarita Simonyan "was considered to be more influential than Hillary Clinton and Angela Merkel" according to one report, "as her network, RT, is blamed for going against the establishment in the West, and electing the likes of Donald Trump."
The congressional correspondents group banned RT from the halls of the U.S. Congress after the U.S. justice department said RT had to register as an official foreign agent. Russia retaliated by naming official U.S. broadcasters, Radio Free Europe, Radio Liberty and Voice of America as "foreign agents."
